In the vast majority of patients, most or all of their symptoms disappear either immediately after surgery or within a few weeks. Any residual symptoms are usually the result of permanent nerve damage due to severe nerve compression, or another medical problem. In some severe cases, the nerve will regenerate, and normal sensation will return. Nerve regeneration occurs at the rate of about an inch a month.
